Over the past ten years, the rate of fungal infections, especially those caused by yeast, have dramatically increased. Wescor, Inc is now pleased to offer FUNGICHROM®, which uses 6 chromogenic and 10 conventional substrates to identify the main species of pathogenic yeast.

FUNGICHROM allows users to identify yeasts based on the presence or the absence of various enzymes as indicated by a color change in the reagent well. The included color chart aids in the interpretation of results.

Each FUNGICHROM tray also includes a positive control well, (well T+) which reveals the assimilation of glucose.

The enzymatic activities are detected by three kinds of reactions: Hydrolysis of chromogenic substrates: The osidase and peptidase activities of the yeasts hydrolyse the chromogenic substrates leading to the release of para-nitroaniline, para-nitrophenol or ortho-nitrophenol, which are characterised by a yellow-coloration (wells GAL, PRO, ONPG, EPA, SGL, GLY).

Oxidation of synthetic substrates: The activity of phenoloxidase in the presence of caffeic acid produces a brown coloration (well POX).

Assimilation of natural substrates: The use of sugars is revealed by the color change of bromocresol purple (BCP) from violet to yellow or by the absence of color (wells GAL-SAC, TRE, MAL, CEL, RAF, LAC). The resistance to actidione is revealed by the same principle (well ACT). The hydrolysis of urea releases ammonia, which alkalinizes the medium making phenol red (PR) turn a pink color (well URE).
